Information

The 2009 symposium will be hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Swarthmore College, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The symposium will begin with a reception and dinner on Friday evening, September 25 and will continue through the end of the afternoon on Saturday, the 26th, with student talks and poster presentations.

A campus map with the physics department highlighted is available; as are driving directions to campus and an interactive campus map (the Friday night banquet is in Clothier Hall and the Saturday talks are in the Science Center).

Students and faculty will be staying at the Days Inn at 650 Baltimore Pike, Springfield PA, 19064 Phone: 610-544-4700 (1.5 miles from campus). Note: Do not make your reservations directly.

Students who present a talk or a poster on their research at the 2009 Fall Symposium will be writing a short paper to be published in the proceedings of the symposium. These papers are due at the symposium. Students, read the guidelines for paper preparation.

New as of 22 September:

The reception will be begin at 6:00 PM on Friday at Upper Tarble in Clothier Hall. We recommend locating Clothier Hall with this interactive campus map. The reception will last a long time, as people arrive from distant locations. Dinner will be served at 7:30. The hotel (link above) is nearby, but too far to walk (and there's no public transportation). If you're driving to Swarthmore and arrive early enough, you can check into the hotel and then drive over to campus. Here's a screenshot of a map with the hotel-campus route indicated. (There's no street address for the main entrance to campus, and so it's non-trivial to generate this map or driving directions.) The point indicated on campus is the "Ben West" parking lot, denoted "main entrance" on the interactive campus map. That's a great place to park on Friday night, as it's near Clothier Hall. Note that the old Sproul Observatory is right behind Clothier Hall.

If you're arriving by train, you'll note the train (SEPTA, commuter line) station is indicated on the campus map. (Base of Magill Walk; note train track symbol and the blue, white, and red SEPTA logo near the South Entrance.) Clothier Hall is also quite close to the train station. If you have time to go to the hotel after arriving on the train, Eric or David or someone else will be available to drive you. David's office phone is 610-328-8587 and Eric's is 610-328-8249.

On Saturday morning, breakfast will be served at the Science Center, right outside room 101, where the talks will be held. Although you can park in the same Ben West lot we recommended for Friday night, there's a lot right next to the Science Center. It is accessed via the North Entrance to campus, also indicated on the campus map. (If you are an early riser and require an early breakfast at the hotel, you'll get a discount at the hotel's restaurant, and you can, of course, get reimbursed, though you'll have to pay out of pocket; breakfast is not included in our hotel deal).
